Abstract: The present study aimed at finding the differences/similarities between characters (number of the characters, the dialogue between them, their appearance and personality), settings (place, time, landscape, atmosphere and social conditions) and themes of the American novel To Have and Have Not (as prototext) and the Iranian movie Nakhoda Khorshid (as metatext). In order to see how changes and differences between the two different sign systems influence the process of adaptation, the researcher followed Jakobson s (1959) intersemiotic type of translation and Farahzad s (2009) model of intertextuality. Having seen the movie and reading the novel several times, the researcher compared sequences and scenes of the movie with their corresponding texts. Through investigating the intersemiotic translation and intertextual relations (repetition and creation) in the prototext and the metatext, the movie partly repeated some parts of the prototext, but changed and created some other parts. The results indicated that there were only a few absolute repetitions, and that the TT was mainly domesticated. In other words, the movie created a new story for the target audience in a different sign system.
