| Abstract: | Translation plays a crucial role in the exchange of new ideas and knowledge between nations. It can be seen as a way of introducing a new literary form or genre into the target literature. The new genre and model not only arrive as new literary form to substitute with the established models, but also as new genres that the creative writers looked up to (Even Zohar, 1990). Post-modern literature is a new genre in the Persian contemporary literature. This study intended to examine the role of translation in the formation of postmodern literature in the Persian literary system. For this purpose, in the first phase, the researcher, based on Even Zohar s polysystem theory (1990), examined the number of translated postmodern works and Persian postmodern works to investigate which one occupied a central position within the Persian literary polysystem. In the next phase, regarding the impact of translated works on the Persian authors, a group of Persian postmodern writers were interviewed to see how they had familiarized themselves with such a genre and how they had commenced to write postmodern works. Finally, the paratexts such as interview, review, and biographical notice were examined for those Persian authors who were not accessible for the interview. The results clearly showed that translated works comprised a significant number of the postmodern literary works published in Iran and occupied the central position within the Persian literary system. Moreover, the results obtained from the interviews and partextual analyses revealed that the Persian postmodern authors were influenced by the translated works they had read. In addition, some of them claimed that they were inspired by the style of foreign postmodern authors in their works. |
