Abstract: | Wiki as a Web 2.0 technology has been integrated into various educational settings. The role of Web 2.0 especially Wiki as a collaborative learning tool can strongly support learning by using computer-mediated communication in L2 contexts. This study followed a sequential explanatory mixed methods design and it aimed to investigate the impact of Wiki, as a collaborative tool, on ESP learners recognition and production of politeness speech acts. Moreover, ESP students perception about applying Wiki was explored. To this end, the researcher selected 32 PhD students, majoring in Analytical Chemistry from both Tehran University and Islamic Azad University (Science and Research Branch). To collect data, first of all the students were homogenized through the administration of both IELTS academic writing and speaking task 2 (Cambridge IELTS, 2010). All of the homogenized ESP learners were in an experimental group. In this group, Wiki-mediated programs were applied, and the students had this chance to post their course contents and leave their comments. Following that, two Discourse Completion Tests (DCT), a Multiple Discourse Completion (MDCT, Nemati, Rezaee, & Hajmalek 2014; Xo & Wannaruk, 2016) and a Written Discourse Completion test (WDCT, Aufa, 2014; Kuhi & Jadid, 2012) and one Learner Wiki Perception Questionnaire (LWPQ, Son, 2008; Wang.J, Zou, Wang.D, & Xing, 2013) were distributed among the participates before and after the treatment sessions. Inaddition, a Semi-Structured interview was conducted with 10 participants of the study. In order to analyse the data, a paired sample t-test was run and the result indicated that there was a significant difference (p<0.05) among ESP students considering the recognition of politness speech acts from pretest to posttest. Likewise, using crosstabulation, the results revealed that in all of the situations there has been an increace in the use of positive politness strategies, while there has been a decrease in the use of negative politness strategies from pretest to posttest. Also, off-record strategies were hardly used by the participants in different situations and bald-on-record strategies increased from pretest to posttest with the speech acts of refusal and apology while it decreased in the use of suggestion speech act. According to the results of the paired sample t-test, the participants had a high perception of the Wikis in their ESP course. Furthermore, the participants responses to the WDCT and a semi-structured interveiew were analysed based on Brown and Levinson (1987) model. According to the results ESP students found that the Wiki could improve their recognition and production of politness speech acts, because they realized that they should not be pessimistic, and learned perfect ways to express their apology, suggestion, and refusal. Besides, they believed that having collaboration and receiving feedback, could assist their expressing in their suggestions, ideas, agreements and disagreements. |
