| Abstract: | The aim of this study is to analyze Kane's two major plays Blasted and Phaedra s Love in the light of Johann Gottlieb Fichte's philosophy of Subject. Both Kane and Fichte argue that it is through actions that one comes to understand the world with the presupposition that that action needs to be aligned with individual s gaining more consciousness and awareness of himself or herself, the world around and others as well. As far as one cannot gain consciousness through activity, the actions are not helpful and they may end up being destructive, a fact that is clearly implied in the two plays. Characters are unable to use language to express their feelings and perceptions and thus they choose activities to fill in this gap; however, the activities are not purposeful and they do not end up gaining more consciousness and awareness which will in turn transform the actions to violent actions which cause only destruction of all characters. The actions have, thus, no effects on the subjectivity of the characters and the intersubjective dimension of the characters, which must be summoned to come to fruition, will be freezed. |
