Abstract: | Listening is the first language skill before students confront with other skills such as speaking, reading and writing to learn. It has been claimed that over 50 percentage of the time students spend on studying a foreign language is devoted to listening. Accordingly, teachers should put special emphasis on applying teaching strategies which may result in the improvement of students' listening ability. The purpose of the current study was to find out the beneficial ways of implementing Dictogloss and whether it would have any effect on the development of EFL learners' listening skill, as well as learner autonomy. Moreover, an attempt was made to reveal the participants' attitudes when using this method. The study employed a quasi-experimental design since the participants were not chosen randomly. They were placed at the appropriate level according to the results of a proficiency test. In intact classes: 30 EFL learners assigned to the experimental group and the same number in the control group participated in the study. From the two groups involved in the study, the experimental group received Dictogloss, whereas the control group received the conventional technique. The study comprised both quantitative (pre and post-tests, questionnaire) and qualitative (observation) data collection instruments. The data collected from the pre and post-tests were analyzed by implementing an independent samples T-test to compare the test results of the two groups. The findings of the study indicated that Dictogloss is an effective method for improving EFL learners' listening skills. As a result of this effect on the listening skill, we can see some effects on different aspects of listening such as vocabulary that are related to the text, use of some strategies that facilitates comprehension, use of keywords and the variations to reconstruct the text, analysis and correction which allow participants to compare and contrast during listening comprehension. Furthermore, the results of the analysis revealed that Dictogloss had a positive effect on learner autonomy, and the learners had a positive attitude toward the use of dictogloss, as it created a kind of learning environment that was fun, enjoyable, stess-free and efficient for improving their listening skills. Furthermore, the results suggested that the English teacher could use the dictogloss technique in teaching listening comprehension for the students. The researcher found it interesting and challenging for them to be more active in teaching and learning process. |
