| Abstract: | Cyberspace is a platform on which people share their thoughts and projects regardless of place and time (Viires, 2005). Cyberspace has become a new way of publishing different texts and materials. Translations are also among them, and cyber-translations are very common now (Siemens & Schreibman, 2013). In this thesis, the aim was to do a textual analysis of Persian translations of English rhythmic poems on the internet and the printed ones to see if the cyber translations are reliable. “Reliability in translation consists in the trust a user can place in that text, or encourage others to place in it, as a representation or reproduction of the original” (Rahman, 2017, p. 158). In other words, a text’s reliability consists in the user’s willingness to base future actions on an assumed relationship between the original and the translation (Rahman, 2017). The data in this research include different types of rhythmic poems to do a thorough investigation in each kind. They are analyzed using the textual level of Dastjerdi’s (2008) tentative model (as he calls it) and investigated the proportion of preserved and unpreserved items. The data relating to Persian translations in this research include three books in which two of them are the translation of the same poems (Shakespeare’s Sonnets), and the other one is the translation of other poems by one translator. The data relating to cyberspace are gathered from different websites and blogs and are done by different translators. The findings from the analysis showed that cyber translations and non-cyber translations for 28 English rhythmic poems were relatively equal. It proved that cyber translations are just as reliable (according to the earlier definition in the key terms section). The results show that translators should apply printed and cyber translations together, and none is more reliable than the other. It depends on the purpose of the translator to use the one that is desired. This study will contribute to the community of literary translators by letting them know that they can use cyber translations and non-cyber translations. |
