Abstract: | This mixed-methods study investigated the impact of engaging with English videos on Instagram on the oral complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF) of Iranian adult EFL learners. Forty participants aged 18 to 41, selected via convenience sampling, were randomly assigned to an experimental group engaging with Instagram content and a control group, being exposed to the same videos in a classroom setting. Both groups watched 20 English-language videos over two months. Quantitative data were collected through pretests and posttests measuring syntactic and lexical complexity, accuracy, and fluency, while qualitative data were gathered via semi-structured interviews to explore learners’ attitudes toward Instagram as a language-learning platform. Data analysis utilized ANCOVA, ANOVA, regression, and thematic analysis. Results indicated that engagement with Instagram videos did not significantly improve syntactic or lexical complexity, suggesting that Instagram may not provide the necessary input for these aspects of language complexity. However, significant improvements in oral accuracy was observed in the experimental group, indicating Instagram's effectiveness in enhancing language accuracy. Learners reported benefits, including increased motivation and improvements in vocabulary and pronunciation, but noted challenges such as unreliable internet and Instagram distractions. Suggestions for more effective Instagram use included better time management and employing it as a supplementary tool alongside classroom instruction. Although improvements in oral fluency were observed, these gains were more associated with learners' initial fluency levels than with Instagram engagement, indicating that the platform may be especially beneficial for those with higher baseline fluency. The study also identified gender and age as significant moderators. Female learners showed greater gains in syntactic complexity and fluency, while older participants experienced a decline in syntactic complexity, although age did not significantly impact fluency. These findings highlight Instagram's potential as a supplementary tool for language learning, provided challenges like internet access and platform distractions are addressed. It is concluded that integrating social media in language education can enhance engagement and practical use, connecting classroom knowledge with real-world application and empowering teachers through professional development and intentional assignments. |
